Van Gogehe was ‘very angry’ when he was attacked by a van carrying a large number of people in the Amsterdam neighborhood of Eindhoven, Dutch media reports.
Van Gogh and other residents were attacked by three men, one of whom allegedly stabbed the artist in the face, according to the Amsterdam Post.
The attack took place on Sunday morning.
The artist has not been seen in public since the attack, but Dutch media reported that he is receiving treatment for facial injuries.
Dutch police have said that they are investigating whether van Gogh, 78, may have committed a hate crime.
Van gogh was born in Eindhooven, a city of around 20,000 people in southern Holland.
